Their presence usually points to excess moisture inside the home. Silverfish thrive in dark, humid areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, basements, laundry rooms, and spaces near leaking pipes. High humidity gives them the environment they need to survive.
They feed on materials rich in starches and carbohydrates, including paper, cardboard, wallpaper glue, book bindings, and food crumbs. One silverfish does not necessarily mean an infestation, but frequent sightings, shed skins, or small holes in paper and fabric may indicate that more are hiding nearby.
The best way to control silverfish is to reduce moisture by fixing leaks, improving ventilation, and using a dehumidifier when necessary. In most cases, they are more of a warning sign than a serious threat. Once humidity and hiding places are reduced, silverfish usually become much less common.
