Should a child over 7 years old be allowed to sleep in their parents’ bed?

Nighttime fears, nightmares, anxiety, or major changes can still make older children want extra comfort. Instead of dismissing those fears, parents can listen, reassure them, and use calming bedtime routines such as stories, dim lights, or soft music.

Learning to sleep alone should usually happen gradually rather than through pressure. Children may sometimes return to their parents’ bed during stressful periods, and that does not automatically mean something is wrong.

Opinions about older children co-sleeping vary widely between cultures. Some worry about emotional dependence, while others see family bed-sharing as completely normal. What matters most is whether the child feels secure, the family is comfortable with the arrangement, and healthy boundaries are maintained.
