Peter Cullen, best known as the iconic voice of Optimus Prime, died peacefully surrounded by his family, according to a statement from his loved ones. His family asked fans to honor him not only by remembering his performances, but by showing compassion, integrity, loyalty, and service to others. They ended their tribute with the phrase that became closely tied to Cullen and Optimus Prime: “Be strong enough to be gentle.”
Cullen first voiced Optimus Prime in the original Transformers animated series in 1984, giving the character a calm, powerful, and compassionate personality. His performance was inspired by advice from his older brother Larry, a U.S. Marine, who told him that true heroes did not need to shout to prove their strength. Cullen later returned as Optimus in the 2007 live-action Transformers film and continued voicing the character across movies, television, video games, and other productions.
Although Optimus became his defining role, Cullen’s career included many other memorable characters. He voiced Eeyore in several Winnie the Pooh productions, played KARR in Knight Rider, and even contributed vocal effects to the creature in the 1987 film Predator.
