Sophie was the first to notice that something deeper was troubling her. Eventually, a small box was found beneath Lily’s bed containing dozens of letters she had written to her birth parents over the years. Some were innocent and childlike, while others were filled with anger, confusion, sadness, and longing. At the bottom was a recent letter that revealed how much she had been keeping inside.

In that letter, Lily wrote that she was no longer angry. She said that although losing her parents had caused enormous pain, it had also brought her into my life. She wrote that I had not been perfect, but I had stayed, loved her, and been there when she needed someone. Her final words said that I was enough.

Reading the letter changed everything. I realized Lily had been hiding part of her grief because she was afraid it might hurt me. When we finally talked, I told her she never had to choose between remembering her past and loving the family she had now. We cried together and understood that family is not defined only by blood, but by the people who stay, choose each other, and continue showing up with love.
