Emma’s name being missing from the birthday guest list becomes the first sign that something is wrong with what was supposed to be a simple family celebration. What should have been a happy sweet sixteen becomes more serious when another mother suggests that Emma’s exclusion was not accidental. At first, the narrator believes it may simply be a teenage misunderstanding, but the adults’ tense and careful reactions make her suspicious.
