Flea bites are usually very itchy and may become irritated if a child scratches them repeatedly. Ankles are a common target because fleas stay close to the ground and can easily jump onto exposed skin near socks and shoes.
Other possible causes include mosquito bites, bed bug bites, contact dermatitis, or allergic reactions. These conditions can look similar, so the pattern, location, and timing of the bumps can help identify the cause.
Parents should seek medical advice if the rash spreads quickly, becomes very swollen, painful, warm, or starts producing pus, or if the child develops a fever. If fleas are suspected, washing bedding, vacuuming thoroughly, and treating pets can help prevent more bites.
