After a suspected bite, wash the area gently with soap and water, avoid scratching, and use a cool compress if there is swelling or discomfort. Anti-itch treatments such as hydrocortisone or calamine may also help with ordinary irritation.
The main concern is identifying whether the insect was a triatomine bug. Chagas disease is usually transmitted when infected bug feces enter the bite wound, eyes, or mouth—not simply from the bite itself.
If the insect is still nearby, photograph it safely rather than touching it with bare hands. Wash your hands after handling anything around the insect, monitor the bite for worsening redness, swelling, warmth, or pain, and seek medical advice if symptoms become concerning.
