Verrückt, once promoted as the world’s tallest waterslide, was supposed to be part of a fun family day for 10-year-old Caleb Schwab. Before the ride, his father Scott reminded him, “Brothers stick together,” and Caleb replied, “I know, Dad.”
During the ride, Caleb’s raft became airborne and struck part of the overhead structure, causing fatal injuries. His brother Nathan witnessed the tragedy and ran to tell their parents, turning an ordinary day at the water park into an unimaginable nightmare.
The accident led to major investigations into the slide’s design, testing, and operation. Criminal charges were eventually dismissed, Verrückt never reopened and was later dismantled, while Caleb’s family reached civil settlements reportedly worth nearly $20 million.
For the Schwab family, however, the tragedy was never mainly about lawsuits or the record-breaking attraction. It was about losing a 10-year-old son and brother, and Scott being left with the memory of Caleb’s final simple words: “I know, Dad.”
