Some people are only now realizing what the “WC” sign stands for on washrooms

The name dates back to the early days of indoor plumbing. Since homes already had rooms called bathrooms, toilets were often installed in small private rooms resembling closets, leading to the term “Water Closet.”

The abbreviation became widely used and has appeared on restroom signs since around the 1870s. A recent social media video explaining its meaning surprised many viewers who admitted they had never questioned what the letters represented.

Although modern bathrooms rarely resemble literal closets, the term WC remains common in many places. It is a small reminder of how old plumbing terminology can survive long after homes and bathrooms have changed.
