The narrator preserves part of the original drink and contacts his attorney and police while restaurant staff witness Hannah’s condition. Testing later finds a powerful sedative, and investigators discover that Colin had massive gambling debts and wanted access to the narrator’s $45 million fortune.
Documents on Colin’s computer reveal a broader plan to make the narrator appear intoxicated, mentally unstable, and incapable of managing his finances. Hannah eventually recovers, but the evidence leads to criminal charges against Colin and exposes how far the couple had gone to gain financial control.
Although deeply hurt by Hannah’s involvement, the narrator does not push for the harshest punishment against her. He restructures his finances so neither of them can access his wealth and later rewards the young waiter who warned him, realizing that his fortune had not changed him—it had simply revealed the true intentions of the people around him.
