Harlan reveals that his sister Mavis once forged their father’s signature to borrow money. Recently, she had begun asking questions about Noreen’s finances and tried convincing Harlan to give her control, making him fear she might take advantage of Noreen after his death.
His suspicions prove correct when Mavis arrives with power-of-attorney papers and information about Noreen’s private $517,804 brokerage account. Noreen gathers evidence and later reveals that she is the sole beneficiary and trustee of the assets Harlan protected for her.
Noreen confronts Mavis with evidence of her past forgery but chooses not to expose her as long as she stays away from her finances. She realizes Harlan technically left her nothing in his will because he had already ensured that everything she needed belonged safely to her.
