Vertical ridges are very common and often become more noticeable with age. In many cases, they are simply a normal part of aging. However, noticeable changes in nail texture, strength, thickness, or color may sometimes be worth paying closer attention to.
Other nail changes can result from nutrition, repeated exposure to water or chemicals, minor injuries, or cosmetic treatments. Horizontal grooves, known as Beau’s lines, can appear when nail growth is temporarily interrupted by illness, fever, physical stress, or another significant event.
One woman noticed these horizontal grooves across several of her nails and initially thought they were harmless. But when she realized the timing of the lines matched something that had happened to her months earlier, she began looking more closely at what her nails might be revealing.
