The biologist explained that the mysterious creature was a roughtail stingray, a species found along the Atlantic coast. What frightened me most was learning that stingrays have venomous barbs near their tails. Even after a stingray dies, its barb can remain dangerous and may still cause a serious injury if someone accidentally steps on or handles it.
A sting from the barb can cause severe pain, swelling, muscle cramps, nausea, and infection, and in rare circumstances can even be fatal. I immediately thought about how close Charlie had been while sniffing the animal and how I had stood only inches away. What had seemed like an interesting discovery could have ended very differently.
The experience taught me never to touch an unfamiliar sea creature, even when it appears to be dead. Children and pets should also be kept away while the animal is observed from a safe distance or reported to local beach authorities. I still enjoy walking along the shore with Charlie, but now I pay much closer attention to what lies in the sand and have a greater respect for the beautiful but sometimes hidden dangers of the ocean.
