Different families and regions even developed their own informal names for Brazil nuts, with these expressions sometimes being passed down through generations. But beyond their nostalgic value, Brazil nuts are considered highly nutritious and come from enormous trees growing naturally in the Amazon rainforest, particularly in Brazil, Bolivia, and Peru.

The nuts develop inside large pods that fall naturally to the forest floor, where they are collected by local communities. Brazil nut trees can survive for centuries and are an important part of the rainforest ecosystem. The nuts themselves are especially well known for containing selenium, an essential mineral involved in thyroid function, immune health, and protecting cells from oxidative damage.

Because Brazil nuts contain so much selenium, only a small amount is needed, and eating too many regularly can result in excessive selenium intake. In moderation, however, they can be a nutrient-rich addition to the diet. More than simply a snack, Brazil nuts combine nutritional value with traditions and memories that have connected families across generations.
