Sleeping on Your Right Side Could Be Causing More Harm Than You Realize

When lying on the right side, stomach acid may move toward the esophagus more easily, potentially worsening acid reflux in people who are prone to it. This can cause the familiar burning sensation associated with heartburn and may also contribute to uncomfortable or interrupted sleep.

Sleeping on the left side, by comparison, can help keep stomach acid lower because of the position of the stomach. For people who frequently experience nighttime reflux or indigestion, changing sleeping position may therefore help reduce discomfort and make it easier to rest.

Many people experiencing poor sleep focus on their mattress, pillow, or nighttime routine without considering their sleeping position. While changing sides is not a cure for every sleep or digestive problem, paying attention to how your body responds may reveal that a small adjustment can make nighttime rest more comfortable.
