In many cultures, however, seeing a lizard indoors has taken on a deeper meaning. Traditional beliefs sometimes associate their appearance with good luck, prosperity, protection, or an approaching change. Some folklore even interprets where or when a lizard appears—or the sounds it makes—as a possible sign of visitors or unexpected news, although these beliefs have no established scientific basis.
From a practical standpoint, geckos are useful predators that contribute to natural pest control. Their presence may simply indicate that insects are finding their way inside, especially around lights, windows, doors, or other openings. Most common house geckos prefer avoiding people and are more interested in hunting small insects than interacting with humans.
If you would rather keep them outside, reducing their food supply can make your home less attractive. Keeping rooms clean, sealing cracks and openings, eliminating standing water, and reducing lights that draw insects can help. Whether you view a house lizard as a traditional symbol of good fortune or simply a tiny insect hunter, its unexpected appearance usually has a much more ordinary explanation.
