Hours became days before I finally managed to reach her. Kayla told me she was thinking about what she wanted from life and eventually admitted that she wanted a “better life” without children. She believed motherhood would prevent her from living the life she wanted and made it clear she had no intention of coming back. From that moment, I became the twins’ only stable parent.
I obtained legal guardianship and devoted my life to raising the girls. I worked multiple jobs, learned every part of caring for two children, attended their school events, celebrated their birthdays, and watched them grow into young women. Kayla missed every milestone. Eventually, the twins stopped expecting their mother to appear and stopped asking questions that no one could answer.
Then, twenty years later, on the twins’ birthday, Kayla unexpectedly appeared at my door. She was dressed as though she were arriving for an ordinary family visit and behaved as if two decades of absence could simply be forgotten.
