Unsure whether I had simply wrapped it poorly, I checked the footage from my outdoor security camera. Shortly after 3 a.m., the motion detector had recorded a hooded person approaching my entrance. The stranger briefly touched the door handle, looked around, and then walked back toward the sidewalk without attempting to force the door open. A neighbor later told me that someone had also been seen checking gates at another nearby home.
The experience made it clear that aluminum foil wasn’t a security system, but in this case it had acted as a simple visual indicator that the handle had been disturbed. I replaced the makeshift trick with more reliable precautions, adjusting the camera for a better view, checking the locks, improving the lighting around the entrance, and making sure every door and window was properly secured.
What initially seemed like a silly household experiment became an unexpected reminder to pay closer attention to home security. Aluminum foil cannot replace strong locks, cameras, alarms, good lighting, or alert neighbors, but those strange wrinkles prompted me to investigate something I might otherwise have ignored. Sometimes a small unusual detail is enough to make you look more carefully at what is happening around your home.
