The Christmas Dinner That Changed Everything

What my family didn’t know was that Ethan and I had recently purchased a renovated four-bedroom house outside Columbus. We had used money from an investment account my grandmother had left directly to me, not money from my parents. We planned to move after the holidays and rent out our townhouse, keeping the purchase private simply because we wanted to avoid more family arguments about finances.

The next morning, Dad called and told me Lauren had discovered the property transfer through public records and shown it to Mom. Diane became convinced that we had secretly used family money to purchase the house, despite Dad knowing exactly where our money had come from. He warned that she had found our address and intended to confront us. Soon afterward, Dad texted me not to open the door if she arrived.

Then his messages became even more disturbing. Dad said the money I had loaned him wasn’t the only money involved and warned me not to tell Mom about certain “documents”—documents neither Ethan nor I knew anything about. Before I could learn what he meant, a familiar vehicle pulled up outside our home. Moments later, someone knocked on the door, leaving me wondering whether our Christmas argument had uncovered a much larger family secret.
