As coffee flows through the drinking opening, air needs to replace the liquid leaving the cup. Without enough airflow, pressure inside can become uneven, causing the coffee to flow slowly, stop and start, or create the familiar “glug-glug” effect.
The small vent helps balance that pressure, allowing the coffee to come out more smoothly. You can even test it by covering the tiny hole while taking a sip—you may notice the drink becomes harder to pour or begins to gurgle, depending on how tightly the lid seals.
Although some steam can escape through the hole, releasing steam isn’t its main purpose, and it doesn’t make the cup spill-proof. Different manufacturers may place vents in different locations or build airflow into other parts of the lid, but the basic idea is the same: that tiny feature helps make every sip smoother.
