Regularly eating walnuts may also support brain health. They contain omega-3 fats and antioxidant compounds, including polyphenols, that are being studied for their roles in inflammation and oxidative stress. Research has also explored associations between nut consumption and cognitive health, although walnuts should not be considered a treatment or guaranteed way to prevent age-related cognitive decline.

Because walnuts provide protein, fiber, and fat, a modest serving can be filling and may help with appetite control. Despite being calorie-dense, nuts can still fit into a weight-management diet when portions are controlled. Walnuts also provide nutrients such as magnesium and contain small amounts of naturally occurring melatonin, though eating them should not be viewed as a substitute for established approaches to sleep problems.

Moderation remains important because an ounce of walnuts contains roughly 185 calories, so large portions can quickly add substantial calories to the diet. Walnuts can also cause digestive discomfort in some people and may trigger serious reactions in anyone with a tree-nut allergy. For most people without an allergy, however, a moderate portion of walnuts can be a nutritious part of an overall healthy eating pattern.
