Bed Bugs Can Hide Where You Least Expect Them Here Are the Signs to Watch For

One possible warning sign is the appearance of itchy red bumps, sometimes arranged in groups or lines on exposed areas such as the arms, legs, neck, or shoulders. However, bites alone don’t prove that bed bugs are present because people react differently. Other clues include reddish or rust-colored stains on sheets, tiny dark spots around the mattress, shed skins, eggs, or live insects hidden along seams and bed-frame joints.

Bed bug bites are generally not considered dangerous, and bed bugs are not known to transmit diseases to humans. Still, repeated scratching can damage the skin and potentially lead to infection. An infestation can also interfere with sleep and cause significant stress, so unusual swelling, persistent irritation, pain, or signs of infection should be evaluated by a healthcare professional rather than automatically blamed on bed bugs.

If several warning signs appear together, acting quickly can make the problem easier to control. Washing suitable bedding and clothing with hot water, using a high-heat dryer when fabric instructions permit, vacuuming thoroughly, and reducing clutter can help. Because established infestations can be difficult to eliminate completely, professional pest control may be necessary. Checking hotel rooms, luggage after traveling, and secondhand furniture before bringing it home can also reduce the risk of introducing bed bugs.
