My Son Tried to Take the House I Had Already Sold

The next day, while Greg and Dana were away, I took the deed and Walter’s old documents to a lawyer. I legally sold the house to someone who agreed to lease it back to me for the rest of my life for just one dollar a year. For the next six months, I kept the sale secret while Greg and Dana planned what they would do with money they believed was already theirs. They discussed renovations, brought a realtor through the property, and even joked that I wouldn’t be there much longer.

Yesterday, Greg finally placed my suitcase beside the door and announced that a nursing home had a bed waiting for me. He told me to sign over the house and leave by Friday. Instead of arguing, I calmly told him to ask the man who owned the property. Greg laughed, insisting his father had left the house to them. That was when I pulled out the folder and explained that Walter had actually left the house to me—and six months earlier, I had sold it.

Greg and Dana were stunned. Before they could recover, someone knocked at the front door. The new owner had arrived with my lawyer, who calmly suggested they discuss exactly who had been living in whose house. Greg stared at the documents as the future he had planned with my property disappeared in front of him. They had spent months preparing to remove me from my own home, never realizing I had already protected myself—and secured my right to stay there for the rest of my life.
