Which Egg Comes From a Healthy Chicken? The Truth Behind Yolk Colors

Chickens that consume fewer of these pigments may produce lighter-colored yolks, but that does not mean they are unhealthy or poorly cared for. A healthy hen can lay eggs with pale yolks simply because of its diet. Likewise, a deep orange yolk does not automatically mean the egg is healthier, since some producers can add pigments to feed specifically to create a richer color.

Because of this, yolk color alone is not a reliable way to judge egg quality, nutritional value, or animal welfare. More important factors include the quality of the feed, cleanliness, housing conditions, farming practices, and how fresh the eggs are when they reach consumers. These factors provide a much better picture of overall egg quality.

Regardless of whether the yolk is pale yellow, golden, or deep orange, eggs can still provide valuable nutrients such as protein, vitamin B12, vitamin D, selenium, and choline. The key takeaway is that healthy chickens can produce yolks of many different shades, so appearance alone should not be used to decide which egg is better.
