Dolly Parton, who died on August 25, 2026, at age 80, spent nearly six decades married to Carl Dean before his death in 2025. The couple never had children. Parton later explained that although they had once imagined having a family, motherhood ultimately wasn’t the path her life took.
Over the years, Parton came to view that experience differently. She said she believed not having children gave her the freedom to devote herself to her career and to help other people’s children. She was also deeply involved with her nieces and nephews, some of whom affectionately regarded her as a grandmother figure.
Perhaps the clearest expression of that commitment was Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. She founded the program in 1995, inspired in part by her father’s inability to read and write. The program sends age-appropriate books to enrolled young children at no cost to their families and eventually expanded beyond the United States to Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and Ireland.
Its scale became extraordinary. The Imagination Library delivered its 200 millionth book in 2023, but continued growing rapidly afterward. Its official 2025 year-end figures report more than 304.5 million books gifted since the program began, including more than 40 million during 2025 alone. Parton’s life therefore left a legacy involving children that extended far beyond having a family of her own.
