We began examining the room more carefully and took photographs of the suspicious detector. Once we became convinced that someone might have placed a camera in the bedroom, we packed immediately and left the property before midnight. At a diner several towns away, we enlarged the photos and could clearly see what looked like a lens, along with the blinking light that had first attracted our attention.
We posted a warning and contacted the host, who initially insisted the device was part of a security system. But his response became unsettling when he told us we should not have touched it and said someone would come looking for the device. We stopped communicating, saved screenshots of every message, preserved our photographs, and formally reported what we believed was a hidden camera.
The next morning, while reviewing other vacation photos, we noticed another tiny red point near a curtain in the living room, raising fears that there may have been more than one suspicious device. We never received a satisfying explanation, but the experience permanently changed the way we approach vacation rentals. Now we inspect smoke detectors, electronics, and anything that looks unusual before settling in, knowing that one tiny blinking light may reveal something far more serious.
