Before Going to Sleep: The One Kitchen Appliance You Should Never Ignore

Air fryers are one appliance worth checking because they combine electrical components with powerful heating elements. Most are safe when maintained and used correctly, but damaged or defective units can create problems. Regularly inspect cords and plugs for cracks, fraying, discoloration, or signs of excessive heat, and stop using an appliance if you notice melting, unusual smells, smoke, or other indications that something is wrong.

High-powered kitchen appliances should also be connected appropriately rather than relying on extension cords that aren’t designed for heavy electrical loads. Keep outlets dry and clean, provide adequate ventilation around heat-producing devices, and avoid leaving them operating unattended. Combustible items such as paper towels, dishcloths, and packaging should be kept away from hot appliances, while grease and food residue should be cleaned regularly.

Before going to sleep, taking a quick look around the kitchen can help reduce unnecessary risks. Make sure appliances are switched off and, when practical and consistent with manufacturer guidance, unplug devices that don’t need to remain powered overnight. Working smoke alarms are another essential layer of protection and should be tested regularly. Simple habits involving inspection, cleaning, proper use, and awareness can make the kitchen safer without requiring complicated changes.
