On the first recording, Dad revealed that Greg had deliberately spent years separating me from our relatives. He told me that family members wanted distance from me while telling them that I wanted nothing to do with them. Suddenly, the birthdays, holidays, and even Sadie’s wedding that I had missed made sense. Dad also revealed that Greg had borrowed money from several relatives using different excuses and had grown jealous of Joshua’s increasingly close relationship with him. Greg eventually admitted that he wanted everyone dependent on him because he believed that would keep him important in Dad’s life.
I told Greg that if he wanted any chance of repairing what he had destroyed, he needed to repay every debt and personally correct every lie. Dad’s lawyer then revealed that Dad had already arranged for Greg’s outstanding debts to be deducted from his inheritance. Later, I watched Dad’s second recording alone. This time, he admitted his own failures, explaining that he had always praised Greg as the “strong son” while assuming I already understood how deeply I was loved. The handmade furniture, he explained, belonged to me and to whatever future I chose to build.
Four months later, I hosted Thanksgiving, surrounded by relatives I had once believed wanted nothing to do with me. Greg arrived carrying a store-bought pie and, for once, began telling the truth without excuses. I hadn’t forgiven him yet, but honesty had finally replaced manipulation. As I looked at the rocking chair Dad had made with his own hands, I understood what he had wanted me to know all along: I had never been unwanted or forgotten. Someone had simply kept me outside the family for years—and now, at last, I held the key.
