Buttons became fashionable in Europe during the Middle Ages, when elaborate versions made from precious metals, ivory, pearls, and gemstones were symbols of wealth. One widely cited explanation for women’s left-side buttons comes from upper-class households, where wealthy women were often dressed by servants.
