Eleanor calmly told Monica to unplug the car, but the incident made her realize this was part of a larger problem. Over the years, she had avoided confrontation because she wanted peaceful relationships with her neighbors, and Monica had apparently interpreted that kindness as permission. Eleanor even noticed that one of her garden decorations had somehow ended up in Monica’s yard. Determined to make her boundaries unmistakable, she installed a motion-activated sprinkler near the garage and placed a sign stating that the property and outlet were private.
That evening, Monica returned with her charging cable and approached the outlet again. The moment she stepped into the area, the motion sensor activated and sprayed water across the ground, startling her before she noticed the sign. Other neighbors soon began sharing similar experiences, including borrowed tools that were never returned and garden items that had disappeared. Monica could no longer dismiss Eleanor’s complaint as an overreaction and finally admitted that she had become accustomed to using things without asking.
Monica eventually apologized and agreed never to use Eleanor’s electricity again. The tension between them slowly faded, while Eleanor learned something more important than simply lowering her power bill: being kind does not mean allowing others to take advantage of you. She discovered that clear boundaries do not necessarily create conflict—in many cases, they prevent small problems from becoming much bigger ones and protect both property and peace of mind.
