When the envelope finally arrived, the test confirmed without question that Marcus was Lila’s biological father. I expected him to apologize and come home, but instead he confessed something even more painful. His mother had never trusted me and had convinced him that Lila’s appearance proved I had been unfaithful. She had even contacted a lawyer before the baby was born, hoping Marcus could prepare for divorce and prevent me from receiving financial support.
What hurt most was realizing Marcus had allowed his mother to manipulate him because part of him had never completely trusted me. I told him that a DNA test could prove who Lila’s father was, but it could not erase the fact that he had abandoned his wife and newborn daughter based on someone else’s suspicions. Marcus begged for forgiveness and promised to confront his mother, but I made it clear that apologies alone would not repair what had been broken.
A week later, Marcus returned with flowers and told me he had finally established firm boundaries with his mother. I accepted his apology, but told him that reconciliation would only be possible if we went to counseling and rebuilt our trust slowly. Watching him hold Lila again left me with mixed feelings of sadness and hope. The paternity test proved that he was her biological father, but the real test would be whether he could become the husband and father our family deserved.
