Excess heat can shorten battery life, damage internal components, interfere with charging, and in some cases cause the battery to swell. Although serious incidents are uncommon, overheating lithium-ion batteries can produce smoke or fire. The risk can be harder to notice overnight because someone who is asleep may not realize that the phone or charger is becoming unusually hot.

A safer option is to charge your phone on a hard, flat surface where air can circulate freely, such as a bedside table, desk, countertop, or dedicated charging station. Avoid leaving charging devices on mattresses, couches, piles of clothing, or underneath blankets. Using reputable chargers and cables, replacing damaged batteries, and keeping electronics away from extreme temperatures can further reduce unnecessary risk.

The safest habit is also one of the easiest: give your phone room to breathe while it charges. Moving it just a short distance from your pillow to a clear bedside surface can reduce heat buildup and protect both the device and your home. Before going to sleep tonight, take a few seconds to check where your phone is charging—one small change could prevent a much bigger problem.
