Kelly Clarkson Faces Fresh Criticism Over ‘Birdgate’ as Security Footage Emerges and Petition Targets Her ‘The Voice’ Role

Kelly Clarkson is facing renewed scrutiny over her dispute with a Brooklyn shop after newly released security footage prompted The View co-host Sunny Hostin to question the singer’s reaction. The controversy, dubbed “Birdgate,” has also sparked a Change.org petition calling on NBC to remove Clarkson from The Voice.

The debate intensified after Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Pablo Torre released silent surveillance footage showing Clarkson’s entire four-minute-and-50-second visit to Art of Play, a Brooklyn store known for its unusual collectibles and curiosities.

Security Footage Prompts New Questions About Clarkson’s Visit

The footage shows Clarkson browsing the shop, examining a kaleidoscope and speaking with an employee near Molly, the mechanical singing bird at the center of the dispute. She then appears to return several items before leaving the store.

Discussing the video on The View, Hostin suggested Clarkson seemed frustrated during the visit.

“It seems like she kind of had a bit of a tantrum because she starts putting things back kind of quickly,” Hostin said. “She wasn’t in the store very long.”

Guest co-host Raven-Symoné offered an even more critical assessment, describing Clarkson’s behavior as “petty.” Hostin agreed, saying, “She was a little petty.”

However, Raven also defended Clarkson’s right to speak publicly about an encounter she considered insulting. She argued that viewers could not fully understand the singer’s reaction without knowing the personal experiences that might have influenced her perspective.

Raven pointed to Clarkson’s childhood and the fact that she grew up with limited financial means, suggesting that an interaction involving money or a perceived judgment about what she could afford might have affected her differently.

Hostin acknowledged that watching the footage had changed her perspective “a little bit.” Nevertheless, she remained concerned about the consequences of Clarkson using her substantial social media following to criticize a small business.

“When you have a huge platform, there comes a lot of responsibility with that,” Hostin said. “I just can’t imagine that she doesn’t know that there’s that social media mob hanging out on the internet.”

Hostin had previously argued that the disagreement should have been “handled privately,” particularly after Art of Play reported that its employees had received hateful messages, angry phone calls and death threats.

How the Dispute With Art of Play Began

The controversy began on October 10, when Clarkson visited Art of Play and later accused an employee of giving her the Pretty Woman treatment.

According to Clarkson, the employee appeared to assume she could not afford Molly before offering to show her something “comparable.”

Art of Play subsequently disputed that characterization of the encounter. The business explained that Molly was permanently attached to the shop’s wall and used during its magic performances, rather than being an item available for purchase.

The store also clarified that the $15,000 price tag Clarkson referenced was associated with a custom bird available through artist Bliss Kolb. According to the business, an employee had offered to show Clarkson a German-made alternative priced at $2,000.

Clarkson rejected the store’s explanation and shared a photograph of the price tag on social media.

“Okay, cool. So you’re not only rude, you’re also a liar. Got it,” she wrote. “I never blast people, but you, my friend, were an exception.”

Her public criticism brought widespread attention to the shop, but the dispute soon grew beyond the original disagreement. Art of Play’s reports of hostile messages, angry calls and death threats raised concerns about the impact of online backlash on the business and its employees.

Petition Calls for Clarkson to Be Removed From ‘The Voice’

The controversy has now extended to Clarkson’s relationship with NBC. A Change.org petition launched on October 15 calls for the network to remove her from the live shows of The Voice and prevent her from returning to the program in the future.

The petition argues that her alleged conduct conflicts with the competition’s emphasis on “mentorship, professionalism, and respect.”

The campaign also contains a tongue-in-cheek element. Its creator joked about achieving a “historic landslide victory” for the “animatronic bird community,” a reference to Molly and the unusual nature of the dispute.

Despite that humorous framing, the controversy has unfolded alongside more serious allegations involving threats and doxxing directed at the store.

The newly released footage has added another perspective to the debate, but reactions remain divided. While Hostin and Raven criticized aspects of Clarkson’s behavior, Raven also cautioned against assuming that viewers know the full context behind the singer’s response.

For now, the petition has placed additional public attention on Clarkson’s role in The Voice, but NBC has not issued a comment on the Birdgate controversy.

As criticism continues, the dispute raises questions about the responsibilities that come with a large public platform—and how quickly a disagreement between a celebrity and a small business can escalate once it moves onto social media.
