The following morning, I acted as though nothing had happened. I smiled for photographs and allowed Simone to help me get ready. Before leaving, I handed her a velvet box containing what she believed were our wedding rings. In reality, they were inexpensive imitation rings. My fiancé had the real ones safely hidden in his jacket, and my wedding dress had already been moved somewhere secure.
Everything went smoothly until the officiant asked Simone for the rings. Suddenly, she began searching her pockets and dramatically announced that she had lost them. Guests whispered in confusion, but my fiancé remained calm. He revealed that we had overheard the bridesmaids’ conversation and recorded part of their plan. I looked at Simone and told her how deeply she had betrayed my trust. My fiancé then produced our real rings, and we continued the ceremony without further interruption. Simone and the other bridesmaids left before the reception.
