The bitter misunderstanding shattered when Ruth presented the hospital wristband, leading Wendell to reveal a devastating truth: Jimmy had been struck by a drunk driver while rushing to see her with an engagement ring, spending weeks in a coma while Ruth’s mother lied to both of them—telling Ruth that Jimmy ran away, and telling Jimmy that Ruth had died in a car crash.
After learning that Wendell had pawned the locket out of lingering resentment after finding it in the mud where Ruth had thrown it, Wendell broke down in tears upon realizing they had all been victims of a cruel, manipulative deception.
Rushing to Riverview Manor to reunite with an older, stroke-affected Jimmy, Ruth was greeted by his familiar crooked smile and the whisper of her name, beginning a new chapter where daily visits and the recovered locket finally bridged decades of heartbreaking separation.
