Cade Mower and Brayden Howell gave Riley Green a difficult call on The Voice, pairing their contrasting styles for a Battle Round performance of The Red Clay Strays’ “Wondering Why.” Both singers drew praise from the coaches, but only one could continue in the competition.
Kelly Clarkson applauded Howell’s distinctive style and vocal control, including his ability to sustain long notes. She also praised Mower’s raspy, soulful sound. Clarkson said she personally favored Howell, while suggesting Mower could be the stronger choice for the competition.

Adam Levine recalled Mower’s Blind Audition, where all four coaches had turned their chairs, and said he wanted to hear more from him in future rounds. Levine also recognized Howell’s individual style. Queen Latifah said Mower had stayed on her mind since his first appearance, while noting that Howell made the choice challenging.

Green highlighted different strengths in both performers. He said Mower understood his musical identity, something he connected to the experience Mower had gained through live shows. Green praised Howell’s confidence and stage presence, too, and reflected on how much the 19-year-old had already achieved.
The decision carried added significance for Howell, who shared that he had undergone brain surgery a year earlier. He described reaching The Voice stage as a meaningful milestone in his recovery and life. Green praised both artists and called the decision “extremely difficult” before making his choice.
Green ultimately advanced Mower, citing his stage presence and distinctive vocal tone. He also pointed to the rasp in Mower’s delivery and the way he finishes certain words as qualities that could not be taught. Mower called the result one step closer to his goal.
For Howell, the competition ended after the Battle, but his performance and personal account offered a glimpse of the journey behind it. The coaches had recognized his vocal ability and individuality, even as they weighed which artist they believed should move forward.
The show was set to begin Cut Week on November 2, replacing the Knockouts. Each coach would start that round with seven artists, with places in the Live Shows on the line.
