Carrie Underwood’s performance of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” took on added weight as the closing number of a tribute special celebrating Parton’s music and influence. Near the end, Underwood appeared visibly moved, and the show’s final moments turned the solo performance into a collective tribute.

The program, titled I Will Always Love You: A Celebration of Dolly Parton, also featured Reba McEntire, Vince Gill, Ella Langley, Lainey Wilson, Darius Rucker, Zac Brown and Carly Pearce. Underwood’s rendition placed Parton’s best-known song at the center of the evening, with a stage screen showing pink butterfly wings behind the singer.

Underwood delivered the song’s soaring passages, but appeared to become choked up as she reached its conclusion. The performance’s emotional quality stood in contrast with the vocal control she maintained through much of the song. Rather than treating it only as a showcase for a demanding classic, the rendition emphasized the personal significance of performing Parton’s work in a tribute setting.

The two singers have shared several public musical moments over the years. In 2006, Underwood performed “Islands in the Stream” with Kenny Rogers at the Kennedy Center Honors in tribute to Parton. Parton later joined Underwood to sing “I Will Always Love You” during Underwood’s 2009 holiday special. They also took part in the “Forever Country” mashup in 2016, and Underwood co-hosted the 2019 CMA Awards with Parton and McEntire.

Those earlier collaborations give context to Underwood’s choice of song: it was not simply a performance of a celebrated composition, but a return to a piece she had previously sung alongside its writer. “I Will Always Love You” has long been closely associated with Parton, whose songwriting and recordings have reached listeners across generations.

After Underwood’s solo rendition, fellow performers and special guests gathered around her onstage and joined in song. The group’s appearance shifted the close from one singer’s interpretation to a shared expression of admiration. Across the special, artists had offered individual performances; in its final moments, the focus moved to the musicians standing together.

The staging made Underwood’s visible emotion part of the closing scene, while the gathering gave the tribute a communal finish. For a night built around Parton’s enduring songs and influence, ending with several performers sharing the stage offered a final reminder of the connections her music has fostered across country music’s generations.
