Does the Viral Balloon Drain Trick Really Keep Roaches Out?

Share Facebook X

The trick involves removing the drain cover, cutting both ends off a balloon, and stretching the remaining rubber around the cover’s edge. The idea is to create a makeshift seal that makes it harder for cockroaches to squeeze through openings around the drain.

Although the method sounds convenient, there is no reliable evidence that it effectively prevents cockroach infestations. Loose rubber can slip into the pipe, trap hair, or interfere with water drainage. If water begins collecting around the drain, the balloon should be removed immediately.

For better long-term protection, experts recommend using a properly fitted drain screen, repairing leaks, cleaning accumulated residue, and sealing openings around plumbing. Keeping water in the traps of rarely used drains can also help. If cockroaches continue appearing, a plumber or pest-control professional can identify the source and recommend a safer, more dependable solution.
