Before James Arness became closely identified with Marshal Matt Dillon, he was unsure whether accepting the role in Gunsmoke was the right move. In the mid-1950s, he was focused on building a film career and worried that a television series could limit the kinds of opportunities available to him.

Arness had already appeared in films with John Wayne. But television did not carry the same prestige as movies in Hollywood at the time, and a weekly Western seemed like a gamble. If the show failed, Arness feared he could be known mainly as a television actor just as he was trying to establish himself on the big screen. His doubts were serious enough that he considered withdrawing from the production.
Wayne urged him to reconsider. Having spent years making Westerns, Wayne saw a potential advantage in the role: a television series could put Arness in front of viewers week after week, giving him a level of exposure that might be difficult to achieve through films alone. Arness had a trusted colleague’s perspective to weigh against his own concern that television could box him in.
Wayne also made a public show of support. When Gunsmoke premiered on CBS in September 1955, Wayne appeared before the episode and introduced Arness to viewers. The gesture connected the established movie star with the actor about to take on the part of Dodge City marshal.
The series went on to run for twenty seasons on CBS. Arness played Matt Dillon through hundreds of episodes and returned to the character in later reunion films. The role became a defining part of his career, while Gunsmoke helped shape the adult Western on television and became one of the longest-running prime-time dramas in American history.
That outcome stood in sharp contrast to Arness’s original worry. He had feared that a television role might narrow his prospects; instead, Matt Dillon became the character most associated with him. Wayne’s advice—and his appearance at the series’ launch—was part of the story behind a career-defining decision made before audiences ever saw Arness as the marshal.
