The stranger introduced himself as Daniel and claimed to be my father. He showed us an old photograph, unopened letters, and money-order receipts proving he had tried contacting me. Daniel explained that dangerous circumstances involving a criminal investigation had forced him into protective custody and later imprisonment.
Grandpa finally admitted he had returned Daniel’s letters and money because he blamed him for my mother’s death. I felt betrayed, but Daniel didn’t demand forgiveness. Instead, he offered to pay for my medical treatment and simply asked for a chance to become part of my life.
Three weeks later, I began intensive therapy with both men supporting me. Slowly, Grandpa learned to trust Daniel, and six months later, I managed to take three trembling steps between parallel bars. They both cried as they watched. I realized Grandpa would always be the man who raised me, but discovering the truth had also given me the chance to know my father.
