A tragic case of neglect in Berne, Indiana, led to the death of a 2-year-old girl. Police found her in a closet, left alone overnight with a space heater that caused her body temperature to rise to 109°F. The apartment was in disarray, with trash, soiled diapers, and a discolored toddler found in a crib on a soiled mattress. The parents, Sintia Perez and Jace Hirschy, admitted to leaving the child in the closet for over 18 hours without checking on her. An autopsy confirmed she died of hyperthermia. The couple faces criminal charges for neglect, and their other children were removed from the home.
