Other scenes accidentally reveal just how much Hollywood trickery went into creating the supposedly remote island. In The Friendly Physician, studio buildings can reportedly be spotted in the background as the castaways sail away. Ocean sequences weren’t always filmed at sea either; large tanks were used for some scenes, occasionally allowing viewers to glimpse parts of the set or even the shadow of a boom microphone. An episode featuring a Japanese sailor used an especially simple illusion for a submarine—a diver reportedly moved the periscope through the water, with bits of the equipment sometimes becoming visible.

The series contains plenty of smaller continuity errors as well. The Professor drinks fermented berry juice despite previously claiming to be allergic to alcohol, Natalie Schafer can briefly be seen opening her eyes while Mrs. Howell is supposed to be unconscious, and Bob Denver’s real wedding ring appears in They’re Off and Running even though Gilligan was unmarried. There are fascinating pieces of history behind the show too: early production coincided with President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in November 1963, while Alan Hale Jr. reportedly went to extraordinary lengths to leave a Utah film production and reach Los Angeles in time to pursue the role of the Skipper.

But the show’s enduring popularity came from more than bloopers. Bob Denver reportedly helped ensure that the Professor and Mary Ann were finally named in the opening theme beginning with season two, replacing the original “and the rest.” Fans also spent decades debating glamorous Ginger versus wholesome Mary Ann, while the chemistry among all seven castaways helped make the series unforgettable. The visible mistakes and simple special effects don’t diminish Gilligan’s Island—for many fans, they make revisiting the classic comedy even more entertaining.
