Kelly Clarkson Gave ‘Monster Mash’ a Haunting Rock Reworking

Kelly Clarkson brought a darker sound to “Monster Mash” during a Halloween performance on The Kelly Clarkson Show in 2022, turning the familiar novelty hit into a dramatic rock arrangement for the show’s “Kellyoke” segment.

The song, recorded by Bobby “Boris” Pickett and released in 1962, has long been a fixture of Halloween playlists. It reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and its seasonal appeal endured: in 2021, nearly six decades after its debut, it returned to the chart at No. 37.

That familiarity gave Clarkson a well-known starting point. Instead of following the original’s playful, quirky style, she recast the tune as a haunting rock ballad, shifting its mood toward something more theatrical and ominous.

A different kind of Halloween performance

The staging supported the change in tone. The “Kellyoke” set was dressed as an eerie forest, while Clarkson wore an elaborate Halloween costume. Once the music began, the arrangement moved away from the jaunty feel associated with the original and made room for a more forceful vocal performance.

Clarkson drove the rock version with intensity, including soaring high notes. The reworking offered a chance to hear the well-known melody in a different musical setting, while keeping the song’s Halloween identity intact. Rather than treating “Monster Mash” as a straightforward seasonal singalong, the performance leaned into its monster-themed subject matter with a darker atmosphere.

The unusual shift drew attention from viewers who commented on the original performance video on YouTube, which has since been deleted. Some praised the arrangement and the contrast with the original; others described it as a standout version of the song. Those comments reflected how dramatically the new sound departed from the familiar novelty recording.

A seasonal classic, reimagined

Clarkson’s cover became one of the memorable performances from the show’s Halloween celebrations. Its appeal rested on the contrast: a song closely associated with playful monsters and Halloween parties, presented instead with rock instrumentation, theatrical staging and a more ominous mood.

“Monster Mash” had already proved its staying power by returning to the charts decades after its release. Clarkson’s performance offered another way to revisit the classic—not by changing its recognizable identity, but by exploring how differently it could sound when its musical tone was transformed.
