Joe Henley’s Road From Alabama Basketball to ‘The Voice’

Before Joe Henley became a standout on Season 30 of The Voice, the 19-year-old from Grand Bay, Alabama, spent much of his time focused on basketball. He had little experience performing for an audience, making his rapid adjustment to a national singing competition one of the defining parts of his early journey on the show.

Music was part of Henley’s childhood, too. His grandparents ran a small ministry, where gospel hymns were an early influence. He later gravitated toward traditional country artists including Travis Tritt, Keith Whitley, Don Williams and George Strait. For his Blind Audition, he chose Tritt’s “Anymore,” earning chair turns from Kelly Clarkson and Riley Green before selecting Green as his coach.

Their Alabama connection helped the two find common ground. When Green asked Henley about a favourite song, Henley named “My Way,” and the pair shared an impromptu acoustic performance. Henley later described himself and Green as similar, saying their shared background helped him feel at ease.

A different kind of stage

Henley’s other pre-show focus was the basketball court. He played shooting guard and small forward for Cottage Hill Christian Academy in Mobile, wearing number 20. In November 2024, he scored 21 points against McGill-Toolen High School; his final high school games came only months before his television debut.

The transition to performing was not effortless. During the Battle Rounds, Henley sang “Don’t Mind If I Do” with Kenna Elpers, a duet first recorded by Green and Ella Langley. He was still learning to work with a microphone stand and move comfortably onstage. Elpers helped with their harmonies, and Henley later said he thought she deserved to win. Green chose Henley to advance.

As he moved through the competition, Henley grew more confident about the prospect of making music a career. His performances also drew attention online: by late October, his Blind Audition had about 1.8 million YouTube views and 3.1 million Facebook views. His Battle Rounds performance had passed 500,000 YouTube views. Away from the show, he posted an acoustic version of Vince Gill’s “If I Didn’t Have You in My World” on Instagram on October 14 and appeared in a Talented Universe live video session two days later.

A Cut Week moment

On November 2, Henley performed Keith Whitley’s “Don’t Close Your Eyes” during Cut Week. All four coaches gave him a standing ovation. Clarkson said she would be astonished if he did not reach the finale, while Green praised the distinctive warmth of his voice. The performance earned Henley a place in the Live Shows, alongside Team Riley artists Cade Mower and Ferryn & Brinkley.

The Live Shows were scheduled to begin November 9 at 9 p.m. ET on NBC, with episodes available on Peacock the following day.
